Wondering if you can tell me what the difference between "DISTANCE LEARNING" and "ON-LINE CLASSES" is?
Where is your schedule of Distance Learning classes?
Thank you!

Great Question Michelle,
Distance Learning and Online Classes are many times used interchangeably so this can be confusing. Distance Learning basically means any kind of learning that does not meet in a physical space. While this could be done over snail mail, today it is usually done via online classes. You can read this wikipedia article on distance learning if you would like another definition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distance_education
You can find all of OCC’s online courses (distance learning courses) in the schedule for the semester that you are going to attend. Online classes are the first section in the Fall schedule for this year and the classes are listed by campus thereafter.

How do I sign in to a discussion board for distance learning classes?
thanks
Posted by: Deb | September 04, 2007 at 03:26 PM
We have two course management systems, Educator and Blackboard. both have discussion board features but are only available if the instructor activates them for the class, and creates Groups of users to participate. You will belong to at least one group - the entire class. but it is often better when smaller numbers participate, between three and seven, usually.
Anyways, in Blackboard you use the navigation buttons to link to the Discussion Forums from the Communications button. You pick a forum that the instructor has created and enter it. Once in a forum you can create new Threads or read and reply to existing ones.
In Educator, Discussion board too is located within the Communications Link. It uses Groups to create initial Threads. When you select a group you will be transported to a sub-level interface that no longer uses the main navigation links. You must select Leave in the settings table in the middle of the screen. this also allows you to change the view between Linear, Threaded, and Round-table. Finally, you can also share files and have a "group chat" which is more like instant messaging. All of these sub-level features require you to have the latest Java plug-in installed on your browser.
please see the Distance Learning web page http://www.oaklandcc.edu/dl/ for links to additional help files explaining Blackboard and Educator features.

I forgot my password for BlackBoard. How can I retrieve it? I cannot find a link from blackboard that will send the password to my email.

Hello Dayna,
You can find a link for the Blackboard and Educator password refresh form off of the Distance Learning website.
Just follow this link (or copy and paste this address if it does not turn into a link)
http://www.oaklandcc.edu/bb/support/password.htm for direct access to the form.

Hi! I'm interested in the Libray Technicians Program. I am currently working at a small town library. Would I be able to take any of the courses online? any other form of distance learning? Would my current employment (3+ years) count as the 4 credit internship? Any chance to get an earned credit for my work experience in any other areas? Thanks

Can i take my freshman classes online?
Posted by: Catriss | October 29, 2007 at 06:06 PM
Hello Carmen and Catriss,
To find specific courses you’d be interested in, you would access the Online Services link from the OCC homepage http://www.oaklandcc.edu, then click on Students, then click on the link “Search for Distance Learning Sections”.
Also, you may want to contact an advisor or a counselor with additional questions.

Best of luck in your search,

I can't seem to find the "search for Distance Learning Sections" on the website. It seems to be very difficult to find any online courses from OCC. For example, I was never able to locate an online math class for the past three years I have attended OCC.
Thank You

I have used the same blackboard password for years not its saying it's not the right password?

Samir, here is the the path to the "Search for Distance Learning" from the OCC website: https://webreg.oaklandcc.edu > Students > Search for Distance Learning Sections.
We would recommend speaking with a counselor in reference to your question pertaining to an online Math course. http://www.oaklandcc.edu/counseling/

Kelly, we recommend you submit your help request directly to the student helpdesk. Here's the website which offers many options for assistance. http://www.oaklandcc.edu/dl/occ4help/

Under the meeting information for online classes, why does it say "Online Days to be Announced, Times and Room to be Announced." Do you have to log-in at a specific time?

Do you believe that your online class experiences are of the same quality as regular, face-to-face OCC classes? Why or why not?
